Francis Gary Powers (1929–1977) was a U.S. Air Force pilot and CIA contractor who flew covert reconnaissance missions in the U-2 spy plane. He is best known for being shot down over the Soviet Union on May 1, 1960, an incident that caused a major diplomatic crisis between the United States and the USSR. He appears in the archive in connection with the CIA's U-2 and OXCART overhead reconnaissance programs (CIA-UAP-003).
