Allen Hynek (1910–1986) was an American astronomer and professor who served as the scientific consultant to the U.S. Air Force's UFO investigations — Project Sign, Project Grudge, and Project Blue Book — from 1948 to 1969. He participated in the Robertson Panel in 1953 and later founded the Center for UFO Studies, developing the classification system that introduced the term 'close encounter.'
