Richard B. Russell Jr. (1897–1971) was a long-serving U.S. Senator from Georgia and one of the most powerful members of the Senate, chairing the Armed Services Committee. In October 1955, while on an official visit to the Soviet Union, he and two companions witnessed unconventional disc-shaped aircraft in the Trans-Caucasus region, an incident classified and documented in Air Intelligence Information Report IR 193-55.
