Summary
This is Part II of the preliminary Gemini 4 crew debriefing transcript, containing the Visual Sightings section (section 10.0, pages 196-224). Commander James A. McDivitt and Pilot Edward H. White II describe their visual observations during the four-day Gemini 4 mission (June 3-7, 1965).
The most notable anomalous observation in the transcript is McDivitt's account of a curtain-like display of parallel light rays seen on two separate nights, visible below the spacecraft near Australia. Both astronauts also describe "sparkles," luminous particles, and extensive celestial and terrestrial observations from orbit. The debriefing was conducted aboard the recovery ship USS Wasp on June 9, 1965.

The crew and the mission
Gemini 4 was the second crewed mission of the Gemini program, launched on June 3, 1965. Commander James McDivitt and Pilot Edward White completed 62 orbits over four days. The mission included Ed White's historic first American spacewalk on the first day, a 23-minute EVA using a hand-held maneuvering unit.
The visual sightings section covered in Part II represents the crew's systematic recounting of everything anomalous or scientifically significant they observed during the mission. The transcript is structured as a dialogue, with both astronauts responding to questions from debriefing officers.
The curtain of light: McDivitt's most notable observation
The most striking observation in the Visual Sightings section is McDivitt's description of a luminous curtain-like display seen on two separate nights during the orbital flight phase. On two occasions when passing near Australia during the night phase, McDivitt observed a display of parallel light rays extending downward from the spacecraft's perspective.
McDivitt described it as looking "sort of looked like a curtain" and said that it resembled aurora borealis but was positioned below the spacecraft's orbital altitude: "they looked a lot like the Aurora Borealis except that they were down below us." The display was seen twice on different passes, establishing it as a repeatable observation rather than an isolated event. McDivitt noted the parallel, ray-like structure of the light and its extent across a portion of the sky below.
This observation is significant within the PURSUE context because it represents a structured luminous phenomenon at orbital altitude for which McDivitt had no ready explanation -- it was geometrically distinct from known spacecraft-generated particle effects and appeared to be atmospheric or sub-orbital in origin.
Sparkles and luminous particles
Both McDivitt and White discuss luminous particles during the visual sightings debriefing, including "sparkles" visible outside the spacecraft. This observation parallels the "Glenn effect" documented in D015 and forms part of the recurring pattern of luminous particle phenomena reported across multiple Gemini missions.
Terrestrial and celestial observations
The Visual Sightings section covers a wide range of observations. The astronauts describe geographic features seen from orbit, celestial objects including stars and planets, atmospheric phenomena, and cloud formations. They discuss the appearance of sunrise and sunset from orbit and the conditions under which ground features were visible.
